You’re trying to put yourself in that moment and trying to prepare yourself, to have a ‘memory before the game’. I don’t know if you’d call it visualising or dreaming, but I’ve always done it, my whole life”.
The power of imagination…
Visualisation…. or using your imagination…. is an amazingly powerful tool. You might think that taking time out to imagine the future is a bit childish. You may feel under pressure to get on with doing all the important and realistic things in life… like earning money and covering all the bases by worrying about the future. But what if imagination is the key to all those practicalities and problems?
Your subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between what is real and what is imagined. It gets ready for whatever you are expecting in your future… from mental processes to body function, so it is good to expect and think about the best…
Imagination gets your mind ready for the real thing
Brain studies show us that thoughts produce the same mental instructions as actions.
Visualisation affects perception, planning, motor control, attention, and memory. It can enhance motivation, increase confidence and self efficacy, improve motor performance, prime your brain for success, and increase states of flow.
If you imagine world the way you want it, you prime your mind and body to take you there.
Imagination affects physicality too.
Your body physically prepares for whatever you’re thinking about. We are all familiar with the release of adrenaline, raised blood pressure and increased breathing rate when we are getting ready for a scary or nerve racking event.
Focus and concentration, elevates athletic performance, whilst over-analysing detracts from the athlete’s ability to react instinctively. Its more important to have quick reactions in sports than it is to be able to reason… unless of course you’re playing chess.
So visualisation prepares you physically to move towards what you are thinking about.
Imagine and create…
For me the present moment is the point of creation. If we don’t give ourselves time to visualise and imagine, we miss the good stuff… the ideas… the ‘aha’ moments.
Don’t focus on ‘how’…
It’s important to stay focused on the feeling of the end result… where you think you want to get to… rather lose yourself in getting there. Rather than creating larger-than-life barriers in your mind and dwelling on everything that will hold you back, envision yourself being exactly where you want to be. The key is to make your positive vision stronger than anything that can set you back.
